Seven expressions of individuality, one distinctive vision
Carolin Holzhuber | 2026
Inspired by the meaning of idiosyncrasy—the distinctive qualities that make each individual unique—designer Carolin Holzhuber explores the relationship between individuality and harmony in a sculptural footwear collection of seven designs. Each shoe possesses its own character, yet together they form a coherent visual language that celebrates difference without sacrificing unity.
The silhouettes challenge conventional ideas of footwear through exaggerated proportions, architectural heels and unexpected constructions. A chestnut-brown ankle boot combines a sharply pointed black upper with a rounded, sculptural heel, contrasting angularity with softness. A mustard-yellow design features an elongated shaft and a sweeping platform, while an oxblood leather silhouette is animated by cascading fringes that introduce movement and fluidity. Elsewhere, diagonal stitching in contrasting blush pink creates a graphic rhythm across a black boot, while another design features finger-like extensions that fan upwards into an almost biomorphic form. A pale pink boot offers a more delicate expression through its slender shaft, open construction and unconventional heel.
The colour palette moves between warm chestnut, mustard yellow, oxblood, glossy black and pale blush pink. These contrasting tones accentuate the individuality of each design, emphasizing differences in shape, texture and proportion.
The collection’s individuality also emerges through its details. Long, trailing laces introduce a sense of looseness and movement, contrasting with the precision of the constructions. These details further distinguish the shoes, giving each one a recognizable personality.
Despite their contrasting appearances, the designs share a sculptural sensibility, elongated forms and a willingness to challenge traditional footwear conventions. Rather than relying on repetition, Holzhuber creates cohesion through a common approach to experimentation, proportion and detail.
Carolin Holzhuber approaches the collection as a dialogue between individual expression and collective identity. Each design occupies its own position within the group, contributing a different rhythm, texture or silhouette. Seen together, the shoes reveal a collection that is deliberately diverse yet unmistakably homogeneous in its underlying design philosophy.
With IDIOSYNCRASY, Carolin Holzhuber proposes that harmony does not require sameness. Like individuals within a community, each shoe possesses its own defining traits while participating in a larger whole. The result is a collection that celebrates difference as a creative force, demonstrating that a coherent identity can be built not by eliminating contrasts, but by allowing them to coexist.
